He is currently working on a series Debating Darwin examining how Darwin’s ideas have survived into the 21 st century. ![]() Peter Mooney is a senior producer who has worked with RTÉ Radio for 22 years producing a wide variety of programmes such as Soundbyte, What if and Future Tense. Over the years the RTÉ Radio 1 Francis Mac Manus Short Story Competition has resulted in the broadcast of over 500 stories by new and emerging writers and set many authors on the path to publication and recognition. Prizes of €2,000 (2 nd prize) and €1,000 (3 rd prize) will be presented to the winners of the second and third winning stories. The author of the overall winning story will receive €3,000 (1 st prize) and a Waterford Crystal Trophy. All of these stories will be broadcast over the coming months starting with the winning entry over the summer. ![]() The adjudicators were impressed by the high standard of the entries and selected 20 entries for the short–list. The 2005 competition attracted almost 750 entries from all over Ireland and from Irish people living abroad. Entries came from the four corners of Ireland as well as from Irish people living abroad and demonstrated the scope of tradition and imaginations. Speaking after the meeting of the Adjudicators’ Panel in the RTÉ Radio Centre, Chairman Peter Mooney said, “ There were a huge number of entries this year and this shows what a vibrant writing community we have in Ireland. The adjudication panel, under the chairmanship of Peter Mooney, Senior Producer, RTÉ Radio 1, includes novelists Jennifer Johnston and Brian Lynch and journalist Mary Kenny. This is the 20 th year of the competition. The competition for original short stories for radio commemorates the distinguished broadcaster and novelist Francis Mac Manus (1909 - 1965) who was a major influence in encouraging writers and developing radio as a medium for the expression of ideas and the promotion of new writing. The winners of the competition will be announced on Monday 27 March 2005 at a ceremony in Studio 1, RTÉ Radio Centre, at 7pm. ![]() RTÉ Radio 1 today announced a short-list of twenty stories for the Francis McManus Short Story Competition 2006.
